Quick answer: for most Irish homes an Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K or a Google TV Streamer is a better choice than an unbranded Android TV box. Branded devices get regular security updates, have official app stores with RTÉ Player, NOW, Netflix and the other main apps, and are simple to use. Cheap unbranded boxes often run outdated software and may come pre-loaded with unlicensed apps.

Warning about “fully loaded” boxes
Boxes sold as “fully loaded” with free sport and movies use unlicensed streams. Selling or using them can break the law, and they carry malware and scam risks. Buy from reputable Irish retailers.
FAQ
Is a Firestick better than an Android box?
For most people, yes: it is cheaper, updated regularly and supports all the main apps. Certified Google TV devices are equally good.
How do I know if an Android TV box is certified?
Look for “Google TV” or “Android TV” branding and the Google Play Store. Uncertified boxes often use “Android” without Play Protect certification.
Can I watch Saorview on a Firestick?
No. Fire TV sticks stream over the internet. Use your TV's Saorview tuner or a Saorview box for aerial TV.
